Walters, James ALTERNATIVE WORLDS IN HOLLYWOO (Adobe Reader) eBook

Alternative worlds in films such as The Wizard of Oz, It's a Wonderful Life, Donnie Darko and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind offer similarities and resonances to our world, but provide a way for filmmakers to address the human condition by forming a sincere and serious connection with everyday life. An illuminating new book explores the history, background and meaning of films that feature alternative worlds - films in which characters cross back and forth between another world and our own, which bring out correspondences and resonances between the worlds they depict. The popularity of such films suggests a need to engage with important themes during troubling times, as well as to be entertained and transported, says author James Walters - rather than merely constituting part of the wider trend of adults finding comfort in books and films ostensibly for children. The films discussed in the book use the fantasy of an alternative world to debate a series of universal conditions associated with human experience: insecurity, ambition, loneliness, apprehension, bravery, vanity, inarticulateness, anxiety, ambiguity, introversion, love, and so on. Because these films are often viewed as Hollywood 'product' they don't always have the intellectual cachet of European films dealing with similar themes, but Walters suggests that there is complexity and depth behind these superficially light films. Traditionally, Realist cinema has dealt with weighty issues, but increasingly films featuring alternative worlds offer an engaging way of dealing with 'serious' content and issues. In each of the films discussed the flight from the real world results in characters having to face reality again, equipped with new knowledge and experience, enabling them to find a way of living there from that day on.

Manghani, Sunil IMAGE CRITIQUE & THE FALL OF T (Adobe Reader) eBook

Taking the fall of the Berlin Wall as a key marker in recent history - a period in which increasingly we find ourselves watching 'instant history' unfold live on air - the book presents a new critical concept of image critique: a double procedure of both a critique of images and the use of images as a means to engage with our contemporary mediated culture for new critical purposes. A rich array of primary sources are woven together to provide a thorough critique of the recent and lively theoretical debates about visual culture. Topics range from Francis Fukuyama's End of History thesis to metapictures, contemporary East German film and the notion of the public sphere/screen. In staking out a new critical visual theory, the book does not seek to present any straightforward analysis of visual representations of the fall of the Wall, but instead inhabits its historical and ongoing resonance as a means to situate a complex interactive account of history, politics, human action, freedom, the media and visual culture.

QUEER CINEMA IN EUROPE (Adobe Reader) eBook

This landmark collection draws together a number of accessible and insightful essays that explore, for the first time, an exciting new area of academic analysis and debate. Through case studies of key films and filmmakers, the contributors to this volume resituate discussions of queer representation and desire within a uniquely diverse and divergent European context. And raise many provocative questions about understandings of gender, sexuality and identity in film that spill across a variety of national borders, cultures and traditions. Topics include: - queer nationality and the films of Franois Ozon, Olivier Ducastel and Jacques Martineau - the sexual politics of post-communist Prague - depictions of the 'Gay Bar' in such films as Coming Out, Beautiful Thing and Les Nuits Fauves - queer performance and spectatorship in Lola und Bilidikid and Hamam - the Swedish 'Drag King' scene - Monika Treut and queer German cinema - the subversive poetics of Bavo Defurne and Matthias Mller - Dirk Bogarde and international queer stardom. 'Queer Cinema in Europe' demonstrates the vital yet under-valued role that European filmmakers have played in anticipating notions of queer subjectivity in the new millennium.

MacDonald, James RUSSIA FREAKS & FOREIGNERS (Adobe Reader) eBook

Russia, Freaks and Foreigners is a collection of three thematically linked plays set against the backdrop of a fractured, post-Soviet Russian society. Written by acclaimed playwright James MacDonald, who is cerebral palsied, these performance texts critique accepted notions of normality within authority, offering various models of difference - physical, cultural and moral - and their stories of dislocation. Their themes, contextualized here by companion essays, expand the boundaries of British drama and connect to the comic grotesque tradition by giving the 'abnormal' a broad appeal. To date, MacDonald is one of the few severely disabled playwrights to have their work staged and he deals with issues rarely covered in drama. Consequently, Russia, Freaks and Foreigners is a daring portrayal of disability from the inside.
The rise of 'New Wave' cinema in 1970s Hong Kong has had a significant cultural and economic impact on the film industry of China. Hong Kong New Wave Cinema presents a comprehensive picture of the films made in this vibrant era and the complexity of issues they tackle such as East-West conflict, colonial politics, the struggle of women in a modernizing Asian city and identity crisis, all portrayed in visually striking ways. Tong delves into the cinematic style and aesthetics of the New Wave directors, many of whom were graduates of Western universities, and applies auteur and genre theory to the group's work. As well as penetrating the narrative content, structure and the mise-en-scene of specific films through theoretical analysis, the book explores the development of TV and film industries in Hong Kong during the 1960s and 1970s, the elevated quality of cinema during this period and the entry of Hong Kong filmmakers, such as Tsui Hark and Ann Hui, into the mainstream and Hollywood in the 1990s. Hong Kong New Wave Cinema maps the birth and eventual decline of celebrated 'New Wave' in a fascinating and thorough manner. Tong relates the movement to a wider historical context of the developing society and culture of Hong Kong at that time. His study of the celebrated golden age of Hong Kong film contextualises 'New Wave' and describes its wide-reaching effects upon contemporary cinema in Hong Kong, the greater China region and far beyond.

 Sacred Theatre (Adobe Reader) eBook

"The notion of sacred has long informed the work of British dramatists such as Harold Pinter and Tom Stoppard, and Ralph Yarrow's Sacred Theatre is the first book to examine the role of the sacred in the practice, process and performance of drama. The volume considers the definition of the terms 'sacred' and theatre and suggests that the joining of the two is a unique experience for writer, performer and viewer. It examines how such an ambiguous term is defined and how sacred can be represented and expressed through performance. These ideas form an animated dialogue and delve into the heart of playwrights' and audiences' ongoing relationship with all things spiritual. Yarrow draws upon elements of sociology, anthropology and critical theory as well as analytical readings of an array of plays, texts and performances, allowing room for personal experiences of what is sacred and examination of how theatre interacts with the otherworldly. The book investigates structural understandings and functions of the sacred in theatre, offering stimulation for discussion within performance and theatre teaching. Sacred Theatre provides an engaging multi-disciplinary approach to the sacred in theatre and performance, making it essential for anyone intrigued by the intersection of drama and consciousness."

Media & Values: Intimate Transgressions in a Changing Moral and Cultural Landscape (Adobe Reader) eBook

Media & Values provides a major empirical investigation into the moral performance of the media. Based on 22 focus groups, three nationally representative questionnaire surveys and interviews with senior media personnel and regulators, this book charts the changing position of the media as a moral voice representing ways in which we live. A central theme of the study is how television has lost moral authority to pronounce on the way we should live and instead has increasingly reflected, and given visibility to, the values and norms of a variety of social groups. The book examines not just the lack of moral certainty that has overtaken television, but the lack of moral certainty of the audience in discussing social, moral and political issues. Particular attention is also given to the whole question of privacy in modern society and the performance of the media in intruding into private performances.

Issues in Curating, Contemporary Art and Performance (Adobe Reader) eBook

"Issues in Curating Contemporary Art and Performance proposes that the concept of curating is a complex field of enquiry. By drawing together artists, curators, architects and cultural theorists, it proposes new approaches to curating and ways of developing critical enquiry about this increasingly expanding field. Focusing on pertinent issues in curating contemporary art and performance, the book's four parts examine forms of thinking in contemporary curating; curating and the interdisciplinary; as intervention and contestation; as a form of reconsideration of conventional museum spaces and as a problematic in 'emerging' practices. Beginning with a contextual 'map' of recent thinking on curating which examines some of the issues that have emerged in curatorial discourse over the last ten years, the volume then investigates curating as a research process and a form of collaboration in considering contemporary photography and video. The relationships between writing and curating, reception and encounter is proposed as part of a way of thinking as a critical spatial practice, and cross-disciplinary issues are considered in curating science / art exhibitions. Historical and contemporary perspectives examine issues of gender and marginalisation and diversity; and the particular issues relating to curating and practices such as animation, site-specific dance and computer-based work are discussed."

Berra, John Declarations of Independence: American Cinema and the Partiality of Independent Production (Adobe Reader) eBook

"American independent cinema has been an important creative and cultural media entity for the past fifteen years. The approach of this sector is one of cultural construction that simultaneously provides a socio-political reference through which critics and audience can attach certain films to popular movements and ideas. Declarations of Independence questions the supposed autonomy of this cinema and asks if independent film can possibly survive in the face of the mass-production and profit of Hollywood. Berra's text presents the reader with a unique structural approach to the subject matter with his arguments mirroring the actual film production process. He gives detailed insight into the core product with reference to specific films and studies of audiences and their enthusiasm for this type of alternative media. American Independent cinema continues to grow as a fashionable scene and Declarations of Independence analyses its popularity, economic viability and the production process of so-called 'niche' cinema. Berra uses directors such as Quentin Tarantino and Steven Soderberg as examples of those who have crossed successfully into the cultural mainstream, altering media and public perception. This comprehensive book is a useful resource for scholars as it gives an overview of the industry from conception of a film right though to festival exposure and public consumption. Berra also presents a strong academic argument and places the discussion of this increasingly popular genre within a wider socio-political context."

Convergence and Fragmentation: Media Technology and the Information Society (Adobe Reader) eBook

"Convergence under pressure leads to fragmentation. Therefore, the role of the newest information and communication technologies and formats in a changing Europe must be analysed not only in terms of optimistic market projections but also in terms of realistic trends toward complementary fragmentations. The exclusion of majorities of the populations of most European countries from technologically advanced and expensive consumer devices means that we should take into account the shifting conflicts of inclusion and exclusion. Continuity and discontinuity in the development of media technology requires us to leave behind a number of traditional notions, methods and data used for national developments and international comparisons. The contradictory tendencies of convergence (implying a similarity and increasing unity of experience) and fragmentation (implying a growing differentiation of experience) are tied to general aspects of this development and to the question of whether we are really moving into a new European information society."
