Rosivach, Vincent J. WHEN A YOUNG MAN FALLS IN LOVE eBook

In this stimulating and provocative book Vincent J. Rosivach examines the plays of New Comedy to reveal how the sexual relationships between the male and female protagonists are essentially exploitative. When A Young Man Falls in Love examines plays including Menander, The Bad-Tempered Man, and The Wet-Nurse, to establish how the representations of heterosexual relationships fall into various stereotypical patterns and to explore the suppositions about social status which underlie these stereotypical and comic portrayals.

Hoskins, Robert Graham Greene (Adobe Reader) eBook

This study reveals Greene in a dual role as "author," one who projects literary experience into his view of life and subsequently projects both his experience and its "literary" interpretation into his fiction; and it defines two phases of Greene's novels through the changing relationship between writer and protagonists. The first phase progresses from acutely sensitive, self-divided young men somewhat like the young Greene to embittered, alienated characters ostensibly at great distance from their creator. The second phase (1939-) includes a series of "portraits of the artist" through which Greene confronts more directly the tensions and conflicts of his private life. Includes bibliography and index.

Morgan, Robin Sisterhood Is Forever: The Women's Anthology for a New Millennium (Mobipocket) eBook

Thirty years after Robin Morgan's groundbreaking anthology, Sisterhood Is Powerful -- named by The American Librarians' Association one of "The 100 Most Influential Books of the Twentieth Century" -- comes this landmark new collection for the twenty-first century.Sisterhood Is Forever -- with over 60 original essays Morgan commissioned from well-known feminist leaders plus energetic Gen X and Y activists -- is a composite mural of the female experience in America: where we've been, where we are, where we're going. The stunning scope of topics ranges from reproductive, health, and environmental issues to workplace inequities and the economics of women's unpaid labor; from globalization to the politics of aging; from cyberspace, violence against women, and electoral politics to spirituality, the law, the media, and academia. The deliberately audacious mix of contributors spans different generations, races, ethnicities, and sexual preferences: CEOs, housewives, rock stars, farmers, scientists, prostituted women, politicians, women in prison, firefighters, disability activists, artists, flight attendants, an army general, an astronaut, an anchorwoman, even a pair of teens who edit a girls' magazine. Each article celebrates the writer's personal voice -- her humor, passion, anger, and the integrity of her perspective -- while offering the latest data on women's status, political analysis, new "how-to" tools for activism, and visionary yet practical strategies for the future -- strategies needed now more than ever. Robin Morgan's own contributions are everything her readers expect: prophetic, powerfully argued, unsentimentally lyrical. From her introduction: "The book you hold in your hands is a tool for the future -- a future also in your hands." Edna Acosta-Beln Carol J.
"Naked Truths" explores how sexual difference is communicated symbolically in Greco- Roman art and architecture. Highlighting the visual mechanisms that regulated and reinforced gender roles, this volume demonstrates the application of feminist approaches to a diverse repertory of classical art and, offering both topical and controversial readings of the subjects.
Among the topics discussed are the dynamics of female beauty and male violence in early Italian society; portrayals of nursing mothers in Etruscan and Greek art; the divested breast in classical art; a feminist reading of the nude cult status of the Knidian Aphrodite; Clytemnestra and the iconography of transgression; images of Sappho in Greek vase painting; mortal and divine sexuality in the Parthenon frieze; voyeuristic intercations inspired by the figure of the hermaphrodite; and the role of desire and desirability in shaping a nuanced understanding of sex and gender in the ancient world.
Contributors: Aileen Ajootian, Larissa Bonfante, Shelby Brown, Beth Cohen, Natalie Boymel Kampen, Joan Reilly, John Robb, Nanette Salomon, Jane McIntosh Snyder, Francine Viret Bernal, John G. Younger.

Truth or Dare: Art & Documentary (Adobe Reader) eBook

Increased experimentation by filmmakers such as Michael Moore and Morgan Spurlock means that the walls between art and documentary are collapsing, generating innovative ideas and attracting an entirely new audience. Truth or Dare is the innovative product of a Whitechapel Gallery conference, bringing together renowned artists, filmmakers, writers and curators. Pearce and McLaughlin's book reveals the debates that flared that day surrounding the binary of art and documentary and the tensions of freedom and responsibility. The ethics of this new wave of documentary are also questioned, since the authenticity of documentary seems to clash with the experimentation and imagination of art. As the distinction between different art forms becomes more and more blurred, Truth or Dare explores the shift from two separate entities of documentary film and contemporary art to the obscuring of boundaries. The discussion extends to new technological developments that allow crossover and opportunities for collaboration. All of these issues are explored in written chapters and edited transcripts of conversation from the conference, illustrated with stills of moving image work and accompanied by a DVD of the artists' experimentation. This is a unique and timely collection of reflection and analysis by documentary makers and artists concerning where they position their art forms in relation to each other, and the shape of filmmaking to come. The cross-disciplinary opinions and mixed media format of Truth or Dare engages the reader, so that they too become part of the ongoing debate.

Starks, Michael Switching to Digital Television: UK Public Policy and the Market (Adobe Reader) eBook

Between 2008 and 2012 the UK plans to turn off its conventional analogue terrestrial television and switch fully to digital TV. This is part of a trend across all the technologically advanced nations of the world. The city of Berlin led the way in 2003. The Netherlands became the first country to switch fully in 2006. Digital television was launched in the UK in 1998. Its growth has been dramatic and by no means smooth. The decision to switch fully is, at its heart, a political one: governments and regulators manage terrestrial spectrum and are ultimately responsible for switchover policy. Switching off the conventional analogue television signals to which consumers (and voters) have been accustomed for most of their lives poses a tricky political challenge. It cannot be accomplished by government diktat. Switching to Digital Television shows how, for success, public policy needs to work in conjunction with both competitive market forces and with organised broadcasting industry collaboration. Switching to Digital Television is an authoritative study of the policy of digital switchover. It is based primarily on UK experience but includes comparative studies spanning the United States, Japan and the leading countries of western Europe.
"Lovefuries offers a double bill of performance pieces that explode national and personal pressures to keep silent, and explore the surprising and shocking resurgences of life that break through grief. In The Contracting Sea, the fiance of a just-shipwrecked sailor is challenged by a feminine elemental force of catastrophe to throw off the shackles of her common humanity. The second play, The Hanging Judge, explores from the inside an occurrence of sexual abuse in a contemporary Welsh context, and how one survivor finds the courage to discover defiance. This second volume of dramatist-director Rabey's plays for his own Lurking Truth/Gwir sy'n Llechu theatre company also includes the short two-hander Bite or Suck, completing a collection of innovative drama that restlessly explores what is possible at the extreme boundaries of human language and physicality. David Ian Rabey is Professor of Drama and Theatre Studies at Aberystwyth University, and Artistic Director of Lurking Truth/Gwir sy'n Llechu theatre company, which he co-founded in 1985."
