For Adobe eBooks, only users of Adobe Acrobat 6.x (or greater)** can transfer their Adobe ebooks to a handheld computer. eBooks downloaded for Adobe eBook Reader are not readable on handheld computers and PDA devices. If you are using Adobe eBook Reader, please refer to the section, Migrating to Adobe Acrobat 6.x (or greater).

Because Adobe Acrobat / Acrobat Reader allows each person to "Name Activate" twelve copies of the Adobe Acrobat / Acrobat Reader software (six computer/PDA combinations), consumers can have copies of their ebooks on more than one device. Because each ebook has been personalized, they can only be opened in copies of Adobe Acrobat Reader which have been "Name Activated" to the same account.

Adobe currently only supports the transfer of encrypted ebooks to PalmOS devices. To install the necessary software and transfer Adobe ebooks to your handheld computer/PDA, follow these instructions:

  1. Download a copy of Adobe Acrobat Reader (6.x or greater) for your PalmOS device from Adobe.

  2. Install Adobe Acrobat Reader for PalmOS on your desktop computer. Once installed, you can use your Palm Hotsync Manager to install the Adobe Acrobat Reader application (*.prc file) on your PalmOS handheld. For more detailed instructions, visit the Adobe website.

  3. To activate your copy of Adobe Acrobat, Adobe offers two options: EZ Activation (version 6.0.1 and greater only) or Named Activation. Named Activation identifies your computer using an account (either a Microsoft Passport account or and Adobe ID account) and allows you to share your ebooks with other devices registered to this account. To activate your copy of Adobe Acrobat using Named Activation, open your desktop copy of Adobe Acrobat and choose the "Adobe DRM Activator" from the "Advanced" or "Tools" menu under "Ebook Web Services" or visit Adobe's DRM Activator website. It will first verify and activate your desktop copy of Adobe Acrobat and then will provide you with the option to activate your handheld device. EZ Activation does not require an account ID and happens automatically when you download/transfer your first ebook to your computer/PDA. EZ Activation does not allow you to share your ebooks with more than one computer and/or PDA.

  4. To transfer Adobe ebooks to a handheld device, open your desktop copy of Adobe Acrobat, open your "Bookshelf," select the ebooks you want to transfer to your handheld device, and choose "Send to Mobile Device" from the toolbar.

  5. Your Adobe ebooks will be prepared for viewing on your PDA by "tagging" them with reflowable information. Once they have been prepared, they will be copied to your PalmOS HotSync folder, and the next time you synchronize your PDA, the ebooks will be transferred.
If you have not yet downloaded an ebook, please review the section on Downloading your first ebook.

* Note for Adobe eBook Reader users:
Only Acrobat Acrobat Reader supports transferring eBooks to a handheld computer. Adobe eBook Reader (formerly Glassbook Reader) does not support transferring eBooks to a handheld computer.

** Note that Adobe Acrobat 6.x contains Adobe Reader 6.x. Adobe Reader 6.x with eBook support is required to read eBooks. Please be sure you have installed Adobe Reader 6.x with eBook support.
