Problem What To Do
How do I correct the following Microsoft Reader Installer Information error message: "Elevated user access privileges are required to install this application"? You need to have administrator privileges on Windows NT in order to install the Microstoft Reader for PC/laptop. Logon as a user with administrative rights and re-install your Microsoft Reader software.
When I try to download a Microsoft ebook, I get a message telling me that my software has not been activated or needs to be updated. I'm using Microsoft Reader 2.0 (or older) and I have activated it. On June 30, 2003 and again on September 30, 2003 Microsoft updated its Microsoft Reader software and it's activation process to address security issues.
  • If you do not have the current version of the Reader software, you must download it from Microsoft, install it, and activate it.

  • If you do have the current version, you will need to re-activate it.
When I click on the download link, a new browser window opens but nothing is displayed and the web browser (or my computer) crashes. The ebook download process uses "pop-up" windows to navigate the transfer of the ebook file. If your internet security (or nuisance) settings prohibit the use of "pop-up" windows, the ebook download process will not work and may cause your web browser (and/or computer) to crash.
If you are receiving a Microsoft Reader Error Message similar to:

"error ####.module ****.dll failed to register"
Please visit Microsoft Reader Frequently Asked Questions or contact Microsoft support by phone at (425) 454-2030 (Note: long distance charges may apply) to try to resolve the problem.
I'm using a Windows operating system and I can't download MSReader ebooks. It appears to download the file to my computer but it doesn't show up in my library for MSReader and I can't locate the ebook file on my hard drive. Delete all temporary internet files from your computer. This is usually achieved within the "Options" or "Preferences" of your internet browser*. Then try downloading your ebook again.

* For example:
  • For Internet Explorer 6.x, select Tools >> Internet Options; then under the General tab, select Delete Files in the Temporary Internet Files section.

  • For Netscape 4.x, select Edit >> Preferences; then under Advanced >> Cache, select Clear Disk Cache
I activated my copy of Microsoft Reader during the last two weeks of August, 2004 and it says that it is activated; however, when I try to download a new ebook, I get a warning that my Microsoft Reader is not activated and I can't download the ebook. Microsoft was experiencing problems with its activation servers during this time period, and you may need to return to the Microsoft Activation website and reactivate your copy of Microsoft Reader before you can continue purchasing ebooks.
