How does the ebook download work?
Once a consumer has purchased an ebook, the retailer from which they purchased the ebook will provide them with a URL/hyperlink to download the ebook file. This hyperlink may be provided on the retailer's website within the customer's online account or it may be emailed to the consumer.
This hyperlink will connect the consumer's computer to a computer which stores and delivers copies of the ebook (commonly referred to as an ebook server).
What happens during the transfer of an Adobe Ebook, a Microsoft Ebook, and a Palm Ebook?
For Adobe ebooks, the following steps occur:
- The consumer clicks on the hyperlink, initiating a "conversation" between their computer and the ebook server. The ebook server looks to see if a copy of the appropriate ebook reader software is installed on the consumer's computer.
- The ebook server transfers a file to the consumer's computer called an EBX file. Once downloaded, this file will execute and tell the Adobe ebook reader software how and where to retrieve the consumer's ebook file. The Adobe ebook reader software will open and connect to the appropriate ebook server, beginning an initial "conversation" to download the ebook file.
- During this initial "conversation" between the two computers, the ebook server looks for identification from the consumer's computer. Adobe ebooks can be purchased and downloaded using two different Adobe programs: Adobe eBook Reader and Adobe Acrobat Reader.
- Adobe ebook Reader supplies the necessary identification in the form of a computer ID number, which is stored in the ebook reader software. Storing your computer ID in your Adobe ebook reader software is achieved by "Certifying" the Adobe ebook reader software. To certify your copy of Adobe Ebook Reader go to the "Bookstore" menu within the Adobe Ebook Reader software. If your software requires certification, you will be prompted.
- Adobe Acrobat 6.x (and greater)* provides identification via "activation." Activating your copy of Adobe Acrobat can be achieved in two ways: EZ Activation (version 6.0.1 and greater only) or Named Activation. Named Activation identifies your computer using an account (either a Microsoft Passport account or and Adobe ID account). To activate your copy of Adobe Acrobat using Named Activation, open your copy of Adobe Acrobat and choose the "Adobe DRM Activator" from the "Advanced" or "Tools" menu under "Ebook Web Services" or visit Adobe's DRM Activator website. EZ Activation does not require an account ID and happens automatically when you download your first ebook.
- If the ebook software does not contain the required identification, the "conversation" is aborted and the ebook file is not delivered to the consumer.
- If the ebook server finds the necessary identification, it will personalize a copy of the ebook for the consumer and transfer it to a designated folder on the consumer's computer. (For more information on where Adobe ebooks are stored on your computer, see the section How do I Open and Read My Ebook?)
- The ebook server will record a successful receipt of the ebook and terminate the "conversation," meanwhile the consumer's computer may continue to download the personalized ebook.
